PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In connection with the PRI Alt Eur project, the UC research team also participated in a research project, coordinated by Penal Reform International and in partnership with the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, that aimed to analyse the specific impacts of the covid-19 pandemic on the implementation of community sanctions, on the preparation of prisoners for release and on the work and wellbeing of probation staff.

This project was supported by the International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation (IPPF).

The project included in-depth research in four countries (Georgia, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan and Portugal) as well as a summary comparative report on the impact of the pandemic on probation across Europe, based on the national reports from the EU Member States experts.

The ultimate goal of the project was to identify aspects that could make the system more resilient to future crisis and more adaptive to the needs of people in situations of particular vulnerability.

The project ran throughout 2021. The final event to present the project results took place in January 2022, in virtual format.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

As a result of the project, national reports were prepared for each country involved. In addition, the UC team prepared a comparative study on the impact of the pandemic on non-custodial sanctions and measures in Member States of the European Union.
